Flip-Flopping

Just days away from the Presidential election, you might think the title of this blog post refers to politicians and their tendency to reverse their stands on important issues and policies.

But, no. We’re actually referring to those comfortable backless sandals most people wear only at the beach. Most people does not included our Carrier Representative, Mary.

Mary will spend Election Week on the road for Matchmaker Logistics. She’s kicking off her trip Sunday at a Giants/Steelers game. Mary, a Steelers fan since the age of 6, still hasn’t lived down the time she lost an office bet with me on a previous Giants/Steelers game and was forced to wear a NY Giants baseball cap at the office Christmas party (click here for a photo). She hopes to win that same friendly wager this year and see me in a Steeler’s cap. (Not a chance!)

Early in the week, Mary will visit some of our customers in New Jersey and Connecticut. She flies home on Wednesday to pick up Carrier Rep Jennifer Brown, and then the two head out to Nashville for the NASTC convention. They will attend the Broker forum dinner on Thursday evening and represent Matchmaker Logistics at the NASTC Vendor Showcase on Friday.

What does this have to do with flip-flops, you ask? Well, Mary never leaves home without them. Year-round (even in 30-degree weather!), Mary’s footwear of choice is flip flops. She owns 8 pairs of Rainbow brand flip flops in blue, black, light green, dark green, pink, brown, light brown, and camel. She also brings regular shoes (she estimates 5 pairs on this trip) and matching purses to coordinate with her wardrobe. As if that’s not enough, Mary always packs her own hairdryer as she says the ones provided by hotels don’t have enough power. She also carries the 6-foot banners we use at our vendor booth. How does she fit in the souvenirs she buys for her kids back home? Mary laughs: “I just bring an empty duffel bag to use as a carry-on!”

Do all Steelers fans carry suitcases as heavy as steel? I may be a Giants fan, but my suitcase is petite. I enjoy traveling light and consider it a challenge to avoid checking a bag if I am travelling for 3 days or less! All this talk about flip-flopping and packing suitcases brought an old joke to mind:

A man walked into his bedroom to find his wife packing a suitcase.

“What are you doing?”, he asked

“I’m moving to Las Vegas”, she replied. “I heard that there are call girls out there who get paid $400 a night for doing what I do for you for free!”

The man walked over to the closet and pulled out his suitcase.

“What are you doing?”, asked his wife.

He answered: “I’m going to Vegas too. I want to see you live on $800 a year!”

Go somewhere fun this weekend,

Bob
