Confessions of a Clean Freak

Thursday marked the first day of Spring, and as someone who likes to have a clean house, that meant this weekend was devoted to spring cleaning. Spring cleaning at our house is a family affair; everyone has to participate. And this year, some of our major initiatives included washing every surface inside the house, cleaning out the garage, changing all of the flood lights, repainting the porch ceiling, and fixing the porch lights too!

When it comes to being a “clean freak”, it’s nice to know that I’m in good company. Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, Cameron Diaz, Kirstie Alley, and even John Mellencamp have all shared their love of cleaning and organizing pantries, closets and sock drawers.

I wish a few of these celebrities had been there to help me this weekend, as some of my helpers during our annual spring cleaning weekend didn’t inspire much confidence. As he tidied up his bedroom, my son decided he would wash one of his sweatshirts. Seconds after he stepped into the laundry room, he shouted across the house: “Mo-ooommmmm! What setting do I use on the washing machine?”

I replied: “It depends! What does it say on your sweatshirt?”

He yelled back: “Carolina Tarheels.”

Looks like I still have a few things to teach him. I think I’ll start with one of my favorite good housekeeping tips:

Always keep several get well cards on the mantel.

If unexpected guests arrive, and your house is not picked up,

they will think you’ve been sick and unable to clean.
