Alabama Rivalry Takes to the Road

I was traveling this weekend from Alabama to North Carolina, so I had plenty of time to reflect on Bob’s Thought for the Weekend about vanity plates. Last month, during my trip home from a visit to our Wilmington, NC headquarters, I was rear-ended. I should have had my own vanity license plate: UR2CLOS!

The state of Alabama gets a lot of flack from the rest of the nation. And while its residents may be short on some things, we’re certainly rich in love for our sports teams, our families, God, and country (quite possibly, in that order). Travel the roads of my state, and you’ll find an abundance of vanity plates. And, not surprisingly, University of Alabama and Auburn tags are the most popular choices for personalized plates.

AL.com blogger and photographer Bob Gathany writes: “Alabama has approximately 230,000 personalized license plates. Almost 50,000 of the 90,000 University of Alabama car tags are personalized. 32,500 of the 57,000 Auburn tags carry a personalized message.

Like this one, which combines love of our great nation with the colors of a Crimson Tide fan – and still manages to display a bit of Alabama heart:

This one also manages to make clever use of the Crimson Tide logo, but I don’t know if it’s such a good idea in the heart of the Bible Belt…

This Alabama educator seems to have a sense of humor about how his state is frequently on the low end of the national education rankings…

Finally, I found a few Alabama tags that reference the greatest sports rivalry in the state – Alabama versus Auburn. Someone thinks they’re REAL funny with this one that reads “Auburn Beats Alabama”:

I like how you can tell it was taken while someone was driving. The rivalry is that serious. So serious, in fact, that I have only one thing to say to say in response:

License Plates
