Random Acts of Kindness

It’s easy to look at Friday the 13th with fear or superstition, but November 13th is reserved for something else entirely. Since 1998, many countries have used this date to observe World Kindness Day. Kindness, in the spirit of the movement, is about more than just being nicer than normal to your friends and co-workers. Kindness is about reaching across boundaries that often keep us separate – race, age, social class – and doing something for someone we might not often take the time to embrace. While it’s easy to find plenty to complain

The Best Surprise Ever

Veterans Day is this Wednesday, November 11th. Veterans comprise an important part of the trucking industry, with many companies specifically seeking to hire veterans as soon as they return from overseas. With unemployment and difficulty readjusting common issues for returning veterans, the trucking industry has banded together to give returning veterans a hand up. 10,000 qualified military drivers came home and re-entered the workforce last year, proving that it’s to everyone’s benefit to proudly employ hard-working veterans. Here at Matchmaker, we love veterans like they’re our family – because they are! Nearly every Matchmaker

Old School Rock ‘n Roll

By now, you’re all probably familiar with Overtyme, the band I play in regularly on the weekends. (You can watch our video montage here.) We may not be as well known as the Rolling Stones, but you know what? They’ve been at it a little longer than us. Mick Jagger turns 70 this year – 70! The oldest guy in Overtyme is a sprightly young 60 years old, so we’ve got another good decade ahead of us before we’re selling out world tours in advance, just like the Stones. There are no instructions on

Why’s It Have To Be Snakes?!

You know that ‘Would You Rather?’ game? The one where you’re presented with two challenging scenarios to choose from, and you weigh the options with friends to determine which seems less bad? I have a good one for you on this fine Monday morning: Would you rather find a giant worm in your house or a tiny snake? In our house, we have a finished basement with a pool room – billiards, not swimming – and it was in this room I found myself contemplating that very question. I wasn’t sure which I was

From Our Kooky Spooky Family

This is Shelly, the Matchmaker Logistics Office Manager, writing to you from Charlottesville, VA. Bob is on the road this week, traveling to the annual NASTC conference in Nashville. Then, he moves on to Kentucky to visit some of our shipper and carrier clients. So, I’m pitching in. Because that’s what family does. You see, Matchmaker Logistics has been a family-owned business since 1981. And every member of our team is a part of that family. In fact, we all call our weekly team meetings “Family Meetings”. Modern families come in all shapes and

Scientific American

My generation may have learned a lot in school, but how much have we forgotten? The other night I was blinded by science – or at least by how difficult it can be – when I took a peek at my son’s science homework. If you had to list all of the muscles in the human body or take a chemistry test today, how do you think you’d do? It seems that we Americans are falling behind the rest of the world when it comes to math and science. The Pew Research Center ranked

Airplane Run-Ins!

You may not know it, but Wilmington, NC isn’t just ‘famous’ for being the Matchmaker Logistics headquarters; a few well-known celebrities make their home here. You see, once upon a time, this town was known for filming all kinds of movies and TV shows – Ironman 3, One Tree Hill, Under the Dome and Dawson’s Creek, just to name a few. Wilmington was nicknamed ‘Hollywood South’ and ‘Wilmywood’ for its appeal to producers, directors and actors too. While the film and television industry in Wilmington has died down somewhat, a handful of famous actors

Decorating The Haunted House

I’ll admit it – I scare easily. About the spookiest thing I can handle on a weekly basis is my alarm waking me up on Monday morning. Halloween’s fine by me when it’s not too terrifying – it’s hard to hate a holiday that revolves around buckets of candy and adorable costumed kids coming to your door. My son, on the other hand, always wishes we did more to scare the locals. There are some well-decorated houses on my block for sure, but we’ve never been the family that goes all out on Halloween

What Are the Odds New York City?

What Are the Odds New York City?

Last weekend my wife, my kids and I traveled to New York City to enjoy some family time and, of course, a Giants game at Met Life Stadium. On Game Day, we took the kids to Central Park Zoo. As we headed uptown on the subway, my wife started chatting with a young lady wearing a Giants shirt. “Are you going to the game tonight?” my wife asked. The young lady who would later introduce herself as Jill, replied “Yes!” “So are we”, said my wife. She continued to chat with our family on

As Seen on TV!- Infomercials

Another Monday, and I’m pretty tired. I admit it – I’ve been channel-surfing late at night, and the next thing I know, I’m laughing at the infomercials. Maybe it’s that I sympathize with the people in those commercials who always seem to be having a really hard time. The simplest things always seem to kick their butts – whether it’s reaching for a bowl of cheese curls, or frying an egg. Recently, I learned about a fun party game called simply, “Infomercial.” The game works like this: when someone shouts “infomercial!” at you, you
