It Don’t Matter If It’s Black or White

What has happened to us? I mean, really? First, we were glued to our computer screens watching the llama drama: a pair of llamas – one black, one white – escaped from an Arizona petting zoo at a care facility and darted in and out of traffic in Phoenix, Arizona, leading police on a wild alpaca chase Then, the Internet lost its collective mind over a dress. If you didn’t see it, a woman posted a picture of a dress the mother-of-the-bride wore to her daughter’s wedding. To some, the dress appeared to be

The West Coast Ports Saga

The West Coast Ports Saga

It seems that everyone in our industry has been affected by the problems between the Long Beach Longshoreman’s Union and the West Coast Ports. After the contract between the two parties expired at the end of June 2014, the Port’s management association accused the Longshoreman’s Union of a work slowdown – dragging their shifts out in order to receive extra pay for weekend and holiday hours. The Port wasn’t willing to pay that premium and responded by halting weekend and Monday ship operations in protest. This affected over 29 ports, stretching from Long Beach,

Missing My Monopoly Money

A few weeks ago I decided to play a game of Monopoly with my friends and family. It was my first time playing in several years, and most of my memories involved trying to get out of jail-preferably for free. So you can imagine my surprise when we opened the game and instead of wads of paper bills, I was handed a miniature debit card. After all the progress I’ve made on my credit card debt this year, I wasn’t sure if I should laugh or cry. After I got over my shock, I

Untangling the Resolutions Web…

This Sunday, March 1st, marks the 60th day of the year and the beginning of a new fiscal quarter. It’s also a great time to take stock of our New Year’s Resolutions and see what kind of progress we’ve made toward those lofty goals we set way back in January. If you’re thinking “Resolutions? What resolutions?” you’re not alone. According to a recent study, 50% of Americans make resolutions, but 88% of those people don’t keep them. That’s 156 million failed resolutions every year. Ouch. Here at Matchmaker Logistics, we’ve been bucking the trend

Keeping Up with Kanye

Last night the 87th Academy Awards took place at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood. While I wasn’t strutting down the red carpet, I did catch the show from the best seat in the house – my couch. Watching the Oscars is a yearly tradition in my home. We treat it less like an awards show and more like a football game. I root for my favorite films, hoping they’ll get the recognition they deserve. This year, I was pulling for American Sniper to win Best Picture (as much as I liked 50 Shades of

Fly Me to the Moon, But First…

The first man set foot on the moon when I was five years old. Naturally, this meant that I, along with every other five year old on the planet, wanted to be an astronaut when I grew up. (My second choice was rock star. My third was transportation broker. Not bad, eh?) I was reminded of my old dream when I realized that today marks the 53rd anniversary of astronaut John Glenn’s historic flight. In 1962, Glenn completed the Friendship 7 mission, becoming the first American to orbit the Earth, and the fifth human

50 Shades of Mary

I’m not afraid to admit it: I love the 50 Shades of Grey series. Yes, many people roll their eyes and complain the books are badly written, but half those people are secretly reading them, too. They must be, considering the series has sold over 100 million copies worldwide, been translated into 52 languages, and set a record in the UK as the fastest selling paperback of all time. In other words: I’m not the only one buying them, reading them, and watching them. That’s right-50 Shades of Grey is now a movie, and

Out of the Mouths of Babes

As I’m sure you all know, tomorrow is Valentine’s Day. (And if you didn’t know, consider this your warning!) While most of us celebrate the holiday with chocolates and flowers, there’s another gift that can be just as meaningful – and it’s free! What is this magical gift? Encouragement. I know, because I recently received it from an unexpected place: This year the Matchmaker team is taking on a challenge. Every day, we’re doing at least one thing above and beyond our daily To Do list. A few weeks ago, Mary shared that her

Sleeping on the Job

In my house, the rules are pretty simple. At least that’s what I thought until my youngest son, Timothy, proved otherwise. My kids are only allowed to play video games Friday through Sunday-school days are off limits! And every night, Tim heads to bed at 9PM on the dot. He’s allowed to watch TV in his room for a half an hour, and then it’s lights out at 9:30. Simple, right? I thought so too… During the holidays, I’ll admit-I started relaxing some of our house rules. I let the kids play video games

Strange Names, Real Places

As you know, Matchmaker Logistics has been a bit preoccupied with superheroes for the last year or so. For example, my inner superhero is Batman, and not just because I dream of owning the Batmobile. Ever since we started this whole superhero thing, I’ve been noticing signs of my alter ego in unexpected places. Sometimes the signs are literal, like this picture sent to my inbox the other day. This isn’t just a genius Photoshop job; it’s a real place! Still, it didn’t stop me from wondering: “Would Alfred let me take the Batmobile
