My Biggest Bloopers

Before YouTube, there was America’s Funniest Home Videos. At its height in the early ’90s, AFHV received more than 2,000 VHS tapes a day. Our country fell in love with real people making real blunders, mistakes and bad decisions. In fact, the show has become ABC’s longest running prime time television show, a pop culture mainstay. Accidentally knock the mayor into a lake during a civic awards ceremony or fall off the roof while pretending to be Santa, and if someone catches it on video, one of your most embarrassing moments could go from

Driver’s Kindness Goes a Long Way

A cartoon depicts a truck driver interviewing for a job. The interviewer says: “So, Gary, I see you’ve got twenty years’ experience behind the wheel. That’s great!” Gary replies: “Well, to break it down…it’s actually eight years driving…and 12 years waiting at docks, warehouse, and rail terminals.” We’re not only grateful for the safe miles our drivers log on the road, but also for the way they conduct themselves at the docks. For example, this week, Pam learned that one driver chatted with a loading dock employee while loading freight to ship. The driver,

No Laughing Matter

While the arctic temperatures and record-shattering lows have had everyone shivering this week, we’ve been thinking about another bone-chilling topic: industry fraud. The cold, hard fact is that fraud is rampant in the Transportation & Logistics industry. Although many of our weekly emails have a light, humorous tone, fraud protection is a matter we take very seriously. That’s why we reveal the specifics of our 10-Point Carrier Qualification Process in our fourth Matchmaker Logistics video. These are the measures that quality brokers take to perform due diligence and reduce the risk of transportation fraud

Post-Vacation Blues and To Do’s

Elbert Hubbard said: “No man needs a vacation so much as the man who has just had one.” Creator of PHD Comics, Jorge Cham, put an updated spin on Hubbard’s wise words with his detailed and very accurate graphic representation: Since we’re all busy sifting through emails, setting goals, writing detailed To Do lists, closing out the fiscal year, and going to the gym, I’ll keep this Thought for the Weekend brief. Here are the most astute observations I could find about the pleasure (especially for those with a house full of young children)

Christmas Traditions

Christmas Eve is just a few days away, and the atmosphere in the office is festive, to say the least! Everyone has been discussing their holiday plans and sharing some of their Christmas traditions which include: • Cooking homemade spaghetti on the day the Christmas tree gets decorated • Hiding the Elf on the Shelf for the kids– Although I’m personally not sure that I should have started this tradition! • Watching the movie, Christmas Vacation, on Christmas Eve– Christa says: “It’s a must every year, and I think it gets funnier every time

Finding the Sweet Spot

I used to play a lot of golf. And, for a weekend warrior, I wasn’t half bad. My best round ever was a 73 (one over par), although typically I shot in the low 80’s. In golf, as with many sports, there is a “sweet spot”, an area where the club head hits the ball at just the right angle, creating the perfect backspin for a crisp, well-played shot. I believe there are sweet spots in business too. When a company’s products, services, and leaders are aligned with a customer’s needs and wants, everything

“Family Reunions”

This weekend, the Matchmaker Logistics team will be celebrating the holidays at our annual Christmas party. The entire team will reunite at the Wilmington, NC headquarters for a strategic planning retreat that ends with a dinner and a “Dirty Santa” gift exchange. Our team has grown this year and it will be great to have a few new faces as well as a familiar face around our table. That new familiar face will belong to Tammy Brown, a Matchmaker Logistics employee celebrating a reunion of a different sort. You see, Tammy worked for us

Thanksgiving Humor

We all love Thanksgiving, but it often takes a sense of humor to get through it. So as we get ready to count our blessings, set the table, and put up with the in-laws, we thought we’d send you off with a little holiday humor. Sav-Mor Spirits has been a family owned and operated business for more than 50 years, which makes their take on Thanksgiving even more amusing. It seems they’re not the only ones giving thanks that large family gatherings only happen a few times a year Thanksgiving is an emotional time.

Questioning My Career Choice

This week is all about questions: A transportation video that promises five of them and delivers more than 30, as well as my own personal questions like: “How did I get roped into this?” and “Why isn’t my own life this easy?” Let me explain: Recently, we unveiled our first video in a series about our industry and how it works. We released the video, entitled “What is a Freight or Transportation Broker?”, the same week that “What Does the Fox Say?” by Ylvis became an internet sensation. In fun, I suggested that if
