Play Ball

Matchmaker BaseballI love to talk football and basketball, but I also speak fluent baseball.  They’ve only won one World Series once (in 1995 against the Cleveland Indians), but the Atlanta Braves are my team.

The beauty of being a female baseball plan is that I can appreciate a perfectly executed double play, but I can also appreciate how cute Dan Uggla looks in his tight white pants.  Of course, that’s not the only reason he’s my favorite player.  Check out one of his other talents in this photo.

Uggla, however was not my first baseball ‘crush’.  Other favorite past players have included:  Javier Lopez,  Terry Pendleton, David Justice, John Smoltz, Chipper Jones, Ron Gant  and Brian McCain.

The best baseball game I have ever seen was Game 7 of the NCLS series of 1992.  In my mind, that final play is still as vivid as the day it happened:  Francisco Cabrera hits a line drive to the center field, allowing Sid Bream to score from second base.  Sid Bream slides into home plate and is announced as safe.  The stadium goes wild and The Braves win the game 3-2.

Don’t get me wrong–it’s not always peanuts and cracker jacks.  When a girl loves the Braves, it means that sometimes diamonds are decidedly not her best friend.  There have been plenty of times when I’ve literally torn my foam tomahawk into pieces out of sheer frustration at the way my team played.  But, that’s love.  Nobody explained that deep-rooted attachment better than former owner of the team, Ted Turner:

  • Nobody in the history of the world has lost as much money in sports as I have. It’s reached the point where I judge my success by how big a loss I can absorb.
  • I’m not interested in selling the Braves… but I don’t know why.
  • A few years ago, people were asking me how it felt to lose 100 games in a season. Now ask me how it feels to be a champion. It feels great. It’s wonderful.
  • I bought the Braves for two reasons – to get an autographed baseball without pleading for it and to get good seats.
