I like to win. No matter what the subject, make it a competition, and I’m in it to win it. Derek Jeter said: “You tell me you want to race down the street, I’m going to try to beat you. My grandmother asks me to race down the street, I’m going to try to beat her. And I’ll probably enjoy it.” I always knew that Jeter and I were soul mates….
When “people” (hi, honey!) accuse me of being overly competitive, I reply: “I am not! I’m the most non-competitive person in the whole wide world!” Okay. So, I hide it well. (LOL) But truth be told, I even secretly hate losing at Go Fish! when I play with my eight-year-old son.
So, when we decided to have a pumpkin carving contest at work, well….game on! One of these six pumpkins was carved by yours truly. I’m not allowed to tell you which one is mine, but you are allowed to vote for your favorite on our Facebook page. Voting ends today, so head on over and vote for the best one (i.e. mine). If I don’t win, I’ll try not to be a sore loser like Sally Simpleton:
There was a competition to cross the English Channel doing only the breaststroke. The three women who entered the race were named Annie Allstar, Emily Eagerton and the very competitive Sally Simpleton.
They all dove in together on the shores of the UK. Across the Channel on the shores of France, the judges and media waited patiently. Several hours later Annie Allstar emerged from the waters to hearty cheers. About a half hour behind her, Emily Eagerton emerged to polite applause.
But where was Sally? They waited and waited. The sun was starting to set when Sally Simpleton finally came out of the water, nearly dead from exhaustion. The few reporters that remained rushed to her and asked if she had anything to say. “Yes!” she gasped. “I don’t want to sound like a sore loser, but I think those other two girls cheated — they were using their arms!’
Happy Monday,
Mary
P.S. Here are the Matchmaker pumpkins you can vote for on Facebook:
