Holiday Cheer on Wheels

Each December I find myself amazed, impressed, and, to be completely honest, a little jealous of the talent some people have when it comes to decorating for the holidays. In my home, we keep things pretty basic – a tree in the living room, a wreath on the door, and a few stockings hung over the fireplace. I was feeling good about our level of holiday spirit, until I drove to the grocery store to buy some eggnog and passed a car sporting a pair of reindeer antlers and a shiny red nose. Forget “keeping up with the Joneses”-during the holidays, it’s all about “keeping up with the Clauses!”

In my opinion, there’s nothing merrier than a class 8 truck sporting miles of red and green lights, or a rig giving Santa and his reindeer a lift to their next chimney.

While driving a decorated truck on the highway will technically send you straight to the naughty list (D.O.T. safety regulations say you can’t drive on the highway with any lights other than what’s required to safely operate the vehicle), trucks in parades or parked at rest areas are fair game, as these incredibly festive trucks prove.

If you’re spending the holidays on the highway, you can still have some fun with your truck. A wreath or bright red bow on the grill is an easy, 100% legal, and Santa-approved way to spread that holiday cheer. And speaking of Santa, it’s not a stretch to say that truck drivers are the modern day versions of good ol’ Saint Nick: they both drive a vehicle loaded with goods; horsepower is close enough to Reindeer-power; and, like Santa, truckers often travel through the night to make their deliveries on time.

As for me, I’m finally remembering to move the Elf on the Shelf before the kids wake up each morning, a feat that has pretty much left me exhausted. Next year I plan to follow in the footsteps of this fellow (right), who found an ingenious way to create a truly brilliant holiday display!

Deck the halls this weekend,
