Old School Rock ‘n Roll

By now, you’re all probably familiar with Overtyme, the band I play in regularly on the weekends. (You can watch our video montage here.) We may not be as well known as the Rolling Stones, but you know what? They’ve been at it a little longer than us. Mick Jagger turns 70 this year – 70! The oldest guy in Overtyme is a sprightly young 60 years old, so we’ve got another good decade ahead of us before we’re selling out world tours in advance, just like the Stones.

There are no instructions on how to rock – which is probably good. At my age, reading the fine print’s getting harder. But take a look at this guy!

rock and rollNow that’s what I call getting better with age. I’ve got plenty of years before I’m his age – but with a business to run, mounting family obligations, and weekend gigs, I don’t think I’ll ever get enough practice time to nail a jam like that.

It’s easy to sit around and worry with the my fellow band mates about how much longer we’ll get to play gigs. As it is, I wear earplugs at every show – too much heavy metal with the volume turned up to 11 in my youth! They say if it’s too loud, you’re too old, but I think the people who used to say that are all deaf now. Me, I need my hearing to tune my guitar.

These days, stars are rocking out longer and louder than ever before. Brian Wilson and Paul McCartney are each 71 years old, so I’m still a kid to those guys! And as long as the Stones are still touring? I refuse to even think about hanging up my guitar.
