Happy Accidents

happy accidentsSo, here we are folks. Kicking off the first Monday of the New Year. 2015 was quite a year and you’ve probably seen your share of recaps reminding us of the good, the bad, the ugly, the downright bizarre and the heartbreaking tragedies we witnessed in the past 365 days.

I’m all about seizing the freshness of a New Year to work on myself and improve my habits, yet I couldn’t help but laugh at this meme. It’s funny because we know that we are human and that despite our best intentions to remake ourselves into better, smarter, sexier, more disciplined people, we’re bound to mess things up eventually.

And that leads me to one of my hopes for the New Year. I’m hoping for a few happy accidents. Mistakes, blunders, foibles and errors that benefit me, or others, in great ways. One of my favorites from 2015 happened on The Price is Right where a model accidentally gave away a $21, 960 car. At least she made someone happy! (And no, she didn’t get fired. The producers saw the humor in her error – and undoubtedly the guarantee of increased ratings! – and chose not to edit the blooper out of the aired show.)

Comedian Ellen DeGeneres is a master at rolling with whatever happens on her talk show. In 2015, she compiled a few of her own happy accidents including a naked Ashton Kutcher (you’re welcome, ladies!) and a comedy bit featuring Sofia Vergara’s breasts (I didn’t forget you, guys!). So, take a six-minute coffee break and start your New Year work week with a laugh or two. Because as William Arthur Ward said: “To make mistakes is human; to stumble is commonplace; to be able to laugh at yourself is maturity.” I feel like I’m winning at 2016 already!
