Before YouTube, there was America’s Funniest Home Videos. At its height in the early ’90s, AFHV received more than 2,000 VHS tapes a day. Our country fell in love with real people making real blunders, mistakes and bad decisions. In fact, the show has become ABC’s longest running prime time television show, a pop culture mainstay.
Accidentally knock the mayor into a lake during a civic awards ceremony or fall off the roof while pretending to be Santa, and if someone catches it on video, one of your most embarrassing moments could go from tragedy to triumph. Haven’t we all committed a blunder that’s worthy of a trip to Hollywood, a chance to wave to America’s television viewers, and a $10,000 check?
There were plenty of bloopers as we filmed our first four informational videos for Matchmaker Logistics: the hot spotlights tripped a circuit breaker; I forgot my lines; and I gave Elmer Fudd a run for his money. Although my bloopers weren’t nearly as outrageous as the candid capers and maladroit mishaps on America’s Funniest Home Videos, they still might make you smile.
Chad Hurley, one of the creators of YouTube once said: “We are providing a stage where everyone can participate and everyone can be seen…. We see ourselves as a combination of America’s Funniest Home Videos and Entertainment Tonight.” Believe me when I tell you that I have a whole new respect for the likes of John Tesh and current ET co-host, Rob Marciano. He can sleep easy; I certainly won’t be a threat to his job security!
