As we compared notes about our four-legged family members in an office meeting, inspiration struck. Wouldn’t it be fun to meet the pets of our shippers and carriers too? Last week, we had a blast exchanging adorable photos of our furry friends. (You can see them all on our Facebook page.)
We’re a company – and a nation – obsessed with our pets. For example, according to the American Pet Products Association, we spent $58 billion dollars on our animals in 2014. I’d like to say I’m shocked and appalled, but the truth is I’m one of those crazy Americans. What can I say? My cat, Sir Sir, demands a certain level of luxury.

Not only are we spending billions on food, visits to the vet, and “indestructible” chew toys that will be demolished in less than five minutes, we’re also creating national holidays that celebrate our love for Fido and Fluffy. Did you know that January 14th was National Dress Up Your Pet Day? I thought about dressing up Sir Sir to celebrate, but then I remembered he’s a big, old, fat cat with an attitude, and I didn’t feel like risking my life for a laugh. I hope you’ll forgive me. You can enjoy Kendra’s kitty instead…
On a more serious note, this past Friday was National Change a Pet’s Life Day. It’s an important holiday that draws attention to all of the homeless animals in the world and encourages pet adoption. While it’s true that people have the power to change an animal’s life, pets are just as capable of changing a human’s life. For example, you know you’re a pet lover when:

- Your pets have their own Christmas stockings, and they never get coal (even if they deserve it!)
- The passenger side window of your car is covered in nose prints.
- Your phone is full of pet photos, a fact your non-furry children always bring up in therapy.
- You haven’t been to the doctor in years, but your pets are always up-to-date on their shots.
- You save money on heating costs, thanks to a warm bed filled with cuddly pets.
- No outfit is complete without a generous helping of pet hair.

Speaking of pet hair, some people have found a creative (yet strange and disturbing) solution to this problem. They collect all the hair shed by their dogs, and turn it into sweaters. Forget dressing up your pet. These folks are dressing AS their pets. While I admire their creativity, you won’t catch me in a pet hair sweater any time soon. I have a feeling Sir Sir wouldn’t approve.
