Spring Fever

We’ve been fortunate to enjoy an exceptionally mild winter in North Carolina this year.  But this week, Spring really sprung.  The azaleas and the dogwoods are blooming; the grass is regaining its color; and leaves are budding on all of the trees.  I have to admit that the explosion of flowers combined with sunny days and ‘perfect’ temperatures, have given me a serious case of Spring Fever.

Yet, I haven’t given in to Mother Nature’s temptations.  I’ve remained at my desk, in my office, working hard.  Years ago, when I was a high school student, I heard the following cautionary tale:

One glorious spring day, four high school buddies were so afflicted with Spring Fever, they decided to skip class.  The next day, they told their teacher that they had a flat tire.  Much to their relief, she smiled and said, “Well, you missed a test yesterday, so I want all four of you to sit at your desks and take out a piece of paper.  They sat down, ready for their make-up test and relieved that they got away with playing hooky.  Still smiling, their teacher said:  “First Question: Which tire was flat?”

True story or humorous legend, it was enough to keep me in class.  Today, I’d like to think that it’s my adult maturity that keeps me behind my desk and on top of my reponsibilities, but Friday definitely feels like my permission slip to take a break and enjoy the arrival of Spring this weekend.  As Robin Williams once said: Spring is nature’s way of saying, “Let’s party!”

Enjoy your weekend.
