From Dinosaurs to Dime Stores to Dyno-mite Service!
“I’ve been working with Matchmaker Logistics for a long time–since dinosaurs roamed the earth, I like to joke. To put it another way, when I first became a client, my direct contact was the company’s founder, and I was an employee of F.W. Woolworth Company. Much has changed since then, but one thing remains constant—Matchmaker Logistics’ superior service.
Fast forward to the 1990’s, and I had left the world of retail for a company that produced copper tubing. I was running that company’s 3PL transportation, and I reached out to people who had given me good service and reasonable prices over the years. Bob Skane of Matchmaker Logistics was one of those people. He and this team understand good communication and the need to be proactive, rather than reactive.
Years later, another career shift brought me to my current employer, a retailer with approximately 375 active small vendors, many of which use third-party warehouses. As a cost-savings strategy, the company had implemented a Transportation Management System to minimize LTL hits and bundle shipments together. This increased our need for pickups from multiple locations. It also increased the risk of service failures. For example, sometimes one truck will pick up from Jersey City, then Newark, then Trenton, and then Charlotte before arriving at a final destination. One delay or miscommunication can wreak havoc on the entire schedule.
The company was seeking the best rates in these lanes, but low rates usually don’t equate with the high-level service we need. When a 3PL didn’t babysit the load and a service failure occurred, we’d have to scramble, sometimes losing up to two days while we searched for another carrier. We stumbled and bumbled along like this for a while, until I was able to call Matchmaker Logistics to come to our rescue.
Matchmaker has been very responsive to my company’s needs and the many requests made by our multiple vendors. For example, some warehouses only ship between 1-3 pm, others between 4-5 pm; some must ship on pallets, whereas others refuse to ship on pallets, requiring a driver to handle individual boxes. “Restoring old things is my passion. I’ve restored vintage motorcycles, cars, and most recently, a 1965 John Deere tractor. I purchased the tractor online from a seller in Indiana without questioning how I would get it to my home in Wilmington,NC.
