My Own Olympic Dreams

Football season may be over, but thankfully the Olympic Games are here! As a fan of all sports (my husband says I missed my calling; I should have been a sports broadcaster), the Olympics is near and dear to my heart. My eyes well with pride every time the United States delegates enter the Olympic stadium during the Opening Ceremonies. When Dorothy Hamill won the gold medal for figure skating in 1976, I was one of the millions of young girls who sported her signature bob. I swear that hairstyle was more popular than

Local Boy Makes Good

Since my beloved Steelers didn’t play in yesterday’s Super Bowl, I rooted for players instead of teams. Both the Seattle Seahawks and the Denver Broncos had players with ties to my roots in North Carolina. Russell Wilson (#3) played both football and baseball for NC State from 2007-2011 before transferring to Wisconsin University for the 2011 season and the signing with the Seahawks in 2012. But Nate Irving, linebacker for the Denver Broncos (#56) is native of Wallace-Rose Hill. As we Carolinians would say, Wallace-Rose Hill is just a “hop, skip, and a jump

This Installment Brought to You By Mary’s Husband

Hi y’all. Dale here. Mary’s husband. After weeks of being teased by my wife in her weekly column, I thought it was time to speak out. Do I mind Mary’s jokes about my gift-buying skills, my cooking, my nursing and my housecleaning? Not one bit. It take a lot more than that to ruffle my feathers. My Mary Frances is a fine woman and a true Mother Hen. She takes people under her wing, she cares for everybody, she gives generously to others, and, yes, she rules the roost. Don’t you dare get water

Pass the Whine

Last week was not my week. It included two visits to the ER, a broken ankle, a severe concussion and a sinus hemorrhage. My husband has been charged with playing nurse and family cook. His “cooking” has consisted of: fast food burgers, KFC, pizza and boiled hot dogs. His “nursing” is equally skilled. Let’s just say that his bedside manner needs a little more improvement and a lot less ‘whine’. Somehow, despite my broken ankle, I still managed to put a pot roast in the slow cooker one day so we would have at

My Left Foot

Friday morning, I was in the midst of my regular morning routine, when my son announced that his bus hadn’t come. I would have to drive him to school, which meant that I would be a few minutes late for work. I called my colleague, Pam, to let her know about the delay while locking up the house, when my purse got caught on the strike plate of the door and threw me off balance. Next thing I knew, I was flying down the two dozen stairs that lead to our front door. I

My Smart Phone Diet

Ready for a mind-blowing statistic? In 2013, nearly 2 billion (yes billion with a b!) mobile phones were sold. More than half of them were “smartphones”. Like many people, I’m addicted to my smartphone. As we rang in the New Year, and the media talked about resolutions, I heard quite a bit of talk about “smartphone diets”. When it comes to diets, I’ve tried them all, so of course, I had to know more. Some experts insist that smartphones can help you lose weight: there are calorie trackers and step counters and apps that

I Quit (Every Year)

Can you believe that tomorrow is Christmas Eve?  Where did the year go?  Before we know it, we’ll be singing Auld Lang Syne and toasting the arrival of 2014. Every year I get swept up in the fresh beginnings the new year represents, and I make resolutions.  I mean who doesn’t want to better themselves personally and professionally?  I vow to stop smoking, lose weight, and achieve new heights in many areas of my life.  And, every year, I fail.  As the old saying goes: “A New Year’s resolution is something that goes in

The Ultimate Betrayal

National columnist for CBS Sports, Gregg Doyel, says that the Alabama-Auburn rivalry tops all of the other great sports rivalries, and I agree. He writes: “Lose to Alabama, and its sucks for an Auburn fan for 365 days. The next-door neighbors have a Crimson Tide flag on their porch. The family down the street has a dog named Bear. And forget about the grocery store. Alabama fans are everywhere, and they’re gloating because their school won the biggest game of the year, a game so big that folks in that state would pause if

Worst Christmas Gifts Ever

At this weekend’s office Christmas party, I emerged victorious from the Dirty Santa gift exchange. My gift was stolen from me once and had to be stolen back by my sister, who came as my “date”. It was a bottle of Bacardi. Yum, my favorite. It certainly made up for the year when I opened my gift to discover a dryer lint removal kit. Seriously? That co-worker must have conferred with my husband, Dale, for gift-giving ideas. The same husband who has gifted me with both aftershave and African Queen makeup. Or, maybe this
