“Family Reunions”

This weekend, the Matchmaker Logistics team will be celebrating the holidays at our annual Christmas party. The entire team will reunite at the Wilmington, NC headquarters for a strategic planning retreat that ends with a dinner and a “Dirty Santa” gift exchange. Our team has grown this year and it will be great to have a few new faces as well as a familiar face around our table. That new familiar face will belong to Tammy Brown, a Matchmaker Logistics employee celebrating a reunion of a different sort. You see, Tammy worked for us

Big Bucks and Holiday Antlers

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend. I’m back from a great camping and hunting trip with the entire family, and I think my bottom has finally defrosted after visits to the outhouse in 18-degree weather and snow! I told you that we were going to win the $160 pot this year, and although I missed my shot at a deer, my husband, Dale, came through with flying colors. He got a 7-point buck, the biggest deer of the season. And, he says he’s going to use his winnings to buy me a

Thanksgiving Humor

We all love Thanksgiving, but it often takes a sense of humor to get through it. So as we get ready to count our blessings, set the table, and put up with the in-laws, we thought we’d send you off with a little holiday humor. Sav-Mor Spirits has been a family owned and operated business for more than 50 years, which makes their take on Thanksgiving even more amusing. It seems they’re not the only ones giving thanks that large family gatherings only happen a few times a year Thanksgiving is an emotional time.

Camping: A Different Game of Thrones

It’s been a busy morning. I’ve completed my duties as Camp Fry Cook responsible for cooking the big breakfast–homemade biscuits, sausage gravy, eggs, sausages, and bacon–that our entire family eats together before heading out into the woods. As you read these words, I’m most likely outfitted in my camo, crouching next to a tree with my rifle in hand. No, I haven’t gone postal. But, I have gone hunting. Today marks the beginning of the two-week rifle hunting season in West Virginia. For the past several years, our entire family has spent Thanksgiving week

Questioning My Career Choice

This week is all about questions: A transportation video that promises five of them and delivers more than 30, as well as my own personal questions like: “How did I get roped into this?” and “Why isn’t my own life this easy?” Let me explain: Recently, we unveiled our first video in a series about our industry and how it works. We released the video, entitled “What is a Freight or Transportation Broker?”, the same week that “What Does the Fox Say?” by Ylvis became an internet sensation. In fun, I suggested that if

I’m Stealing Mary’s Monday

Hi. I’m Shelly, the Office Manager at Matchmaker Logistics, and I’ve hijacked Mary’s Monday to share my story of surviving unarmed combat with your favorite logistics Jedi warrior: As Office Manager, I am the go-to person at Matchmaker for accounting, HR and technology. When Mary has an issue (as she did last week with our cloud-based software) she asks me to “wave my magic wand” and get it fixed. I spend most of my time in the back office waving that wand, but I recently had the privilege of attending my first NASTC conference,

Monkeyin’ Around

It is my pleasure to officially introduce you to our newest Carrier Sales Representative, Kendra Rhodes, who has been with us for three months now. You can read Kendra’s bio here, which begins: “Kendra Rhodes has an elite status in this town; she’s one of the few true locals, born and raised in Wilmington, NC.” The town where we’re headquartered has seen rapid growth in recent years. In the past decade alone, our population surged more than 40%, making it one of the country’s fast growing cities. For example, Money magazine named Wilmington, NC

A Force to Be Reckoned With

Wow! The annual NASTC conference was out of this world! Darth Vader, a Storm Trooper, our Office Manager, Shelly, and I had a great time meeting all of the attendees. Our theme? “Let Our Force Be With You!”, which was based off of this presentation about our services. We served Edible Ewoks (Teddy Grahams), Hans Rollos, Asteroids (Hershey Kisses) and Luke Skywater to those who visited our booth. We also had C3PO H20 and Warrior Water for those who preferred a different ‘brand’. Shelly and I dressed as Jedis and we loaned our light

Our Heroes

The holiday season is nearly upon us. Before we know it, we’ll be feasting on Thanksgiving dinner, attending the office holiday party, exchanging gifts with friends and family, and ushering in a new year. But, first, comes what is undoubtedly one of the most important holidays on the American calendar: Veterans Day. I would venture that every single American has a personal connection to a veteran; that’s certainly the case in our office. My father (who founded our company) was a Sergeant in the Army, stationed in Alaska after WWII, and Tammy, our Project

Redneck Jedis

For the past week, I’ve been up to my ears in Star Wars. Not only did my youngest decided to dress as a Star Wars Clone Wars Storm Trooper for Halloween, but my colleague, Shelly, and I have been working on an intergalactic surprise for the NASTC Annual Conference in Nashville, which starts on Thursday. I won’t spoil the surprise with details, but it will be well worth coming to see our booth at the NASTC conference. As I was loading up on supplies, the cashier asked: “What on earth y’all gonna do with
