Ever Been Jilted by a “One-Night Stand”?

Although the majority of freight brokers in our industry run respectable operations, unfortunately there is also a subset of fly-by-night companies that don’t play nicely.  We call them “one-night-stands” because they leave customers and clients feeling jilted.   Recently, we stumbled upon this product commercial on YouTube, and we couldn’t help but laugh.  When it comes to dating, lighting may be ‘everything’, but when it comes to freight brokerage, we believe experience, customer service and integrity are what count!

We’re Not a Cheap Date: Episode I

One of our subcontractors told us a story about how her father was such a cheap date, he used to make his girlfriends hide in the trunk of his car so he only had to pay for one ticket at the entrance to the drive-in theater instead of two!    At Matchmaker, we approach every business transaction with a commitment to a long-term relationship; we don’t believe in acting like a cheap date, a casual fling, or one-night stand.

Here at Matchmaker, we’ve never been ones to watch the clock.  In fact, we’re proud to offer our customers Off-Hours Booking with 24/7 service and follow-up.  Recently, this service and Mary’s dedicated efforts saved the day for one client:   “On a Friday afternoon, one of our carriers dropped the ball and left us with a shipment that had to be moved immediately. Mary went beyond the call of duty, working in the office until 10 PM that night to ensure that the load made it to the distributor on time. She treated our

Or, the Story of the Genie and the Truck Driver  A truck driver was tooling down the highway one afternoon when all of a sudden he heard a “pop.” He steered the rig onto the shoulder, got out of his truck, and walked around it to check his tires.  Under one of the tires, he saw a bottle.  The driver picked it up and wiped off the label, when a very old genie appeared. The genie said, “Man, I’m too old for this! You get one wish — not three — just one.” The

Partnerships in Challenging Times

Matchmaker President Jim Skane describes how the worst of economic times have brought out the best in his partnerships. One of the intangible benefits of challenging times is the strengthening of relationships. While in a state of success and abundance, it is easy to become complacent, seemingly self-sufficient, and perhaps focused on individual achievement. Matchmaker, like many others, has been impacted by the economic downturn. We have been forced to make difficult choices and to reevaluate how we provide value to our customers and to each other. Beneficially, our partnerships both externally and internally have

Community Involvement

Matchmaker stands by our commitment to the community. We recently made donations to the following non-profit agencies: Wilmington Area Rebuilding Ministry (WARM) completes home repairs for low income homeowners, mostly widows and disabled individuals. WARM organizes volunteers to complete most of the repairs and raises funds for building materials. Typical projects include roof repairs, plumbing and electrical system upgrades, wheelchair ramp construction, appliance installation and floor repairs. Good Shepherd Center feeds the hungry, shelters the homeless, and provides support to those in crisis. Their shelter is open every day of the year. The staff

Not Just Waiting for the Sun

Matchmaker VP Bob Skane reports on how the company is responding to the economic downturn. Matchmaker is feeling the pinch just like virtually everyone else. However, we are not waiting for things to improve. We are positioning ourselves to come out of the recession sooner and stronger than our competition. Essentially, we keep our standards high and do the things that have made us successful for 28 years. Building relationships…on both the customer and carrier side of the business. We continue to strengthen and expand our network of shippers and carriers. I have no
