Overcoming Adversity

Wow! What a great football game! As a Giants fan, I’m more than pleased with the outcome, but the truth is both the Patriots and the Giants deserve huge praise-each team came with a great game plan, the will to win, and the belief that they would win. This season, both the Pats and the Giants overcame a lot of adversity to forge strong teams. The Patriots defense was decimated by injuries much of this season and it was quite an accomplishment to win 13 games and go to the Super Bowl. Even after

Super Bowl Trivia

This weekend brings the biggest sporting event of the year. All of us at Matchmaker are looking forward to watching the Super Bowl with family and friends. As a die-hard Giants fan, I am excited about a rematch of the ’08 Super Bowl. I believe Eli will step up in the 4th quarter as he has done all year to take home the Lombardi trophy. Even though neither is a Giants fan Mary (Steelers) and Pam (Panthers) will also be cheering for Big Blue. I guess you could say they are rooting for “anyone

Love Your Work

On this day in 1880, Thomas Edison patented the electric incandescent lamp. 130 years later, on January 27, 2010, Apple unveiled the iPad.  It seems that timing and inventing weren’t the only things Thomas Edison and Steve Jobs had in common. Although Edison’s most famous quote just might be: “Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration”, he also found great pleasure in his work:  “I never did a day’s work in my life. It was all fun.” ~ Thomas A. Edison “For the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning

Accountability

While watching the news this week, I was amazed by the lack of accountability in so many of the headlines. Perhaps the most striking example came from the Costa Concordia cruise ship captain Francesco Schettino, who when accused of abandoning ship too soon after the liner struck rocks off the Tuscan coast, told Italian investigators that he “tripped” into one of the lifeboats while aiding in the evacuation. We all make mistakes; we are human, and they are unavoidable. But what matters is how we handle them. Earlier this week we had a missed

Life Lessons From Football

Like many offices across North America, the “water cooler chat” at Matchmaker Logistics often turns to football. I’m a Giants fan, but our Carrier Services Rep, Mary Nicholas, roots for the Steelers. This week, when I spoke to Mary, I couldn’t resist a little good-natured teasing! No matter which team you root for, I’m sure you will agree that football is a lot like life. Nobody illustrated this better than the legendary Vince Lombardi who was a fountain of quotes that applied to both success in the game and success in life. For example:

Adjusting to Change

“It may be hard for an egg to turn into a bird: it would be a jolly sight harder for it to learn to fly while remaining an egg. We are like eggs at present. And you cannot go on indefinitely being just an ordinary, decent egg. We must be hatched or go bad.” ~ C. S. Lewis “Nothing is permanent, but change.” ~ Heraclitus, Philosopher, 535-475 BC Last week, we announced our name change to Matchmaker Logistics, which meant this week we’ve worked on making changes to our website, our letterhead, our business cards,

New Year, New Name

“Youth is when you’re allowed to stay up late on New Year’s Eve. Middle age is when you’re forced to.” ~ Bill Vaughn “New year, same goal.” ~Joe King “New year, new name, same goal.” ~Bob Skane Notice anything new? We’ve got a new name! To ring in the New Year and to better reflect our evolving role in the industry, Matchmaker Transportation is now Matchmaker Logistics.  It may be a New Year; we may have a new name; but, as always, Matchmaker remains fully committed to the same goal we’ve had for the

Merry Christmas!

“Christmas! The very word brings joy to our hearts. No matter how we may dread the rush, the long Christmas lists for gifts and cards to be bought and given, when Christmas Day comes there is still the same warm feeling we had as children, the same warmth that enfolds our hearts and our homes.”  ~ Joan Winmill Brown “Were I a philosopher, I should write a philosophy of toys, showing that nothing else in life need to be taken seriously, and that Christmas Day in the company of children is one of the few

Holiday Humor

“This weekend, “Put Up Christmas Lights” and “Start Holiday Shopping” are on my “To Do” list. Have fun with whatever holiday preparations are on your “To Do” list, and think of these quotes!” ~Bob “No matter how carefully you stored the lights last year, they will be snarled again this Christmas.”  ~Robert Kirby “Once again we find ourselves enmeshed in the Holiday Season, that very special time of year when we join with our loved ones in sharing centuries-old traditions such as trying to find a parking space at the mall. We traditionally do this
